YouTube is what MTV never dreamed it could be.
Broadband Speeds Keep Getting Faster-
Average speeds by year.
(Kbps= One thousand bits per second)
(Mbps= One million bits per second)
- 1991-14.4 Kbps (Web Browsers opened the World Wide Web to everyone.)
- 2000 = 127 Kbps (The Google search engine grows in popularity.)
- 2004=781 Kbps (61% of American Adults were online. Facebook started.)
- 2005= 1,116 Kbps (YouTube created.)
I first saw the new music television cable network MTV at the Great Lakes Naval Recruit Training Center.
While waiting in line to buzz off my shoulder-length hair, we passed the rec-hall lounge with several large screen projection T.V.s playing the “Duran Duran” music video “Rio.”
I kept slipping back in line, delaying my inevitable shearing but watching as many music videos as possible until I was the last in line.
Years later, when I met my future wife while stationed in Jacksonville, our first date ended with a marathon viewing of videos on MTV.
After discovering the depth of videos available on YouTube, we’ve spent many date nights wading in its stream, casting our line and fishing out old and new favorite music flavors.

Adding to the Free Bins on Our Buffet
When we started our cord curation, we added YouTube as part of our free basic bins in our buffet.
We discovered that most of the content from our favorite cable channels was available as a YouTube channel.
Sometimes, when the commercials start at random times and lengths, it’s a little irritating, but we try not to skip the commercials to ensure our favorite programs remain free on YouTube.
The Basic Bins on the Buffet

Now the Basic Bins on our Buffet included the Local Broadcast Channels we could receive over the air and the free content we could receive through our Internet service.
Tubing Fridays

One of our favorite things to do on YouTube is to search for one of our favorite performer’s music videos or live performances and allow the algorithm to roll through a playlist of related videos.
It’s amazing the depth of obscure videos that are out in the YouTube cloud.
When visiting my in-laws, we would often watch YouTube with them. We searched for a lounge singer who performed in Bristol Connecticut in the 1950s, and found a black and white 16mm film footage of his performance in a smoky nightclub.
Try searching for some of your favorites. You may find a performance you were at.

I was slam dancing in 120 degree heat and blasted by water cannons to keep cool, but it was an unforgettable experience.
